Kerbside Foodwaste Collection Begins!
2000 foodwaste kitchen caddys, kerbside bins and packs of compostable bags were delivered to all Raglan urban households on Thursday 17th August and Friday 18th of August.
In glorious sunshine foodwaste collections began in Raglan’s West side on Monday 21st with a total of 360kgs collected. Raglan’s East side foodwaste collection was done on Tuesday 22nd August with 500 kgs picked up. That’s a total of 860kgs, almost a tonne, of foodwaste diverted from landfill in 1 short week!
This amount of foodwaste is great for Xtreme Zero Waste (XZW) to get their new hot composting system going. Because the bins were delivered last Thursday Raglan residents only had 4 days to collect food scraps from bin delivery to first collection days. This week’s collection is now hot composting in our Horizontal Composting Unit (HCU), and will become rich, nutritious super food compost in 12 weeks in November. It is estimated that around 20% of Raglan’s domestic waste is foodwaste and XZW hopes the amount of foodwaste collected will grow significantly over the coming months.
Kerbside foodwaste collections in Raglan have been made possible as a result of XZW’s research, trialling and roll out funded by MfE’s (Ministry for the Environment) Waste Minimisation Fund and Waikato District Council (WDC).
Thanks Raglan West residents for participating in the trials. Thanks to all the XZW team who have been working hard in difficult conditions this winter to get this service up and running. And thanks Raglan resident for putting out your foodwaste.
